An overhead view of the Menorah Island Project

An overhead view of the Menorah Island Project’s proposed artificial island complex.

The challenge of growing enough food to feed the world has grown more severe in this century.  One of the key aspects of the The Menorah Islands Project is to implement a series of advanced agricultural techniques that will allow residents to grow their own crops on artificial islands which are several miles removed from the main Israeli grid.

The Menorah Islands Project will lead the way toward making better use of land, light and logistics for an increasingly urban population.

One important component of our approach is to incorporate zero-waste and low energy technologies into the task of food production throughout the artificial island complex. Another key component is that the agricultural sections along the Menorah branches and at intersections that will achieve intensification of food supply in a way that is also sustainable and less harmful to the environment. By creating smartly designed cities and communities we can eliminate massive amounts of waste and maximize the output of our agricultural centers.

In addition, there will be a greater emphasis on urban agriculture techniques such as vertical farming throughout the Menorah Islands. Urban agriculture can fit neatly alongside or within existing buildings in a self-contained manner without competing for resources. This is critical throughout an artificial island system such as ours since land (which literally must be created) is at an incredible premium.

Such urban plots will be both at ground level and on rooftops in the form of green roofs and greenhouses.  Here, advanced technologies such as hydroponics or aeroponics will give us the environmental controls that regulate temperature, humidity and light to produce vegetables, fruits and other crops year-round!

For an artificial island project like this to succeed – one could even argue that in fact for all of humanity to survive – advanced agricultural techniques that combine smart planning, urban farming, sustainable living and advanced technologies will have to become the norm as we progress through the 21st century and beyond.
